Our 2025 Trainee Research Awards Recognize Excellence in Innovation, Pain Research and Care.

From scientific innovation to outstanding contributions to pain management, our Awards Committee celebrates individuals and organizations at the forefront of advancing pain science and the well-being of people with lived experience. 

The Canadian Pain Society is strongly committed to strengthening diversity in both research and clinical practice. We encourage nominations by and for racialized persons, Black, Indigenous, and people of color, women, 2SLGBTQ+, persons with disabilities, and others who bring diverse perspectives to the field of pain.

2024 Trainee Research Award

The Canadian Pain Society is pleased to offer Trainee Research Awards to support PhD pain research project(s), one (1) in basic science and one (1) in a clinical-related field.

This Award Includes

  1. A grant of $2,000¹ to support operating costs associated with the student’s dissertation study as outlined in the application (e.g., participant stipends, reagents). 

  2. Complimentary registration to the 2025 Scientific Meeting.

¹ The funds cannot be used for trainee stipends. The duration of these grants is for one year, although an additional one-year extension is available upon request if needed.  This funding does not cover indirect costs.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  1. Applicants must be a current trainee member of the Canadian Pain Society and enrolled as a PhD student in a Canadian university graduate program.

  2. The CPS will evaluate applications according to

    1. the applicant’s qualifications/research background

    2. merit of the proposed research.

  3. Applicants may be considered for the CPS Trainee Research Awards and the CPS EquityTrainee Research Award. However, successful applicants will only be eligible to receive one Award. Winners of the CPS Trainee Research Award will not be eligible to also receive a CPS Equity Trainee Research Award, and vice-versa. Previous winners of a Trainee Research Award are not eligible.

  4. The CPS will distribute the award to the trainee’s institution once granted. 

  5. The recipient must acknowledge the CPS Trainee Research Award in publications and presentations associated with research for which the funding is provided.

HOW TO APPLY

All applications, submitted in English or in French, must include the following:

  1. Completion of our online form.

  2. A copy of the applicant’s CV (in CIHR Biosketch format)

  3. One letter of reference from the applicant’s current supervisor that addresses their research abilities and potential.

  4. A two-page Research Project Summary briefly outlining the research project. This summary should include the following headings (where applicable): Background, Aims, Methods, and Significance. Please use 12pt, Times New Roman Font, with 2cm margins.

  5. All documents must be combined and uploaded into one PDF file.

  6. Files cannot exceed 25 MB.

2024 Equity Trainee Research Award

Equity resources, such as funding opportunities for historically underrepresented trainees,enhances inclusion, diversifies scientific perspectives, and reduces biases. 

 

This award will be granted to a trainee who identifies as belonging to a historically under represented group, including racialized minorities, Indigenous Peoples, persons withdisabilities, members of 2SLGBTQ+ communities, and women, whose Research Project Summary obtains the highest reviewer scores for a Doctoral project in basic or clinical science.

This Award Includes

  1. A grant of $2,000¹ to support operating costs associated with the student’s dissertation study as outlined in the application (e.g., participant stipends, reagents). The duration of these grants is for one year, although an additional one-year extension is available upon request if needed².

  2. Complimentary registration to the 2025 Scientific Meeting.

² Extension requests should be sent to the awards committee chair.  Should any funds remain unspent at the end of that period, they will need to be returned to the Canadian Pain Society. The award start date is January 1,2025.

  5. The CPS will distribute the award to the trainee’s institution once granted. 

  6. The recipient must acknowledge the CPS Trainee Research Award in publications and presentations associated with research for which the funding is provided.

HOW TO APPLY

All applications, submitted in English or in French, must include the following:

  1. Completion of our online form.

  2. A copy of the applicant’s curriculum vitae (in CIHR Biosketch CV format).

  3. A letter of reference from the applicant’s current supervisor that addresses their research abilities and potential.

  4. A statement (500 words, maximum) describing the reasons for applying for the award and how the applicant meets the eligibility criteria. This narrative will only be used to contextualize eligibility criteria. It will not be considered in the evaluation of the scientific merit of the proposed study.

  5. A one-page Research Project Summary briefly outlining the research project. This summary should include the following headings (where applicable): Background, Aims,Methods, and Significance. Please use 12pt, Times New Roman Font, with 2cm margins.

  6. All documents must be combined and uploaded into one PDF file.

  7. Files cannot exceed 25 MB.
